Anthurium

Anthurium is the largest genus of Tropical flowering plants in the Araceae family. They are widespread throughout the Rainforests and Jungles of South America, from Mexico to Argentina and the Caribbean. The name is derived from two Greek words, anthos (flower) and oura (tail) referring to Anthuriums characteristic tail-like inflorescence.

Anthurium display an upright growth pattern, producing impressive leaves along a rhizome and displaying aerial roots at nodes. The arrangement of the leaves is compact and spiral, branching out on slender petioles with leaves displaying a characteristic network of veining with pronounced midrib, lateral veins and leaf margins.

The ‘anthurium flower’ consists of an inflorescence ‘spadex’, which is enveloped and protected by a modified leaf or ‘spathe’ and supported on a long slender stalk. The Spathe develop in a multitude of colours attracting pollinators to flowers along the spadix. When in fruit, Anthurium produce berries of varying colours.

The genus is incredibly diverse and depending on species and maturity of the plant, the shape, size, and texture of the leaves and flower structure can vary considerably
