Hoya

Hoya is a large genus of Tropical flowering plants in the Apocynaceae family. They are distributed widely throughout the tropical rainforests & Jungles of South East Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands and are commonly known as Porcelain flowers or Wax plants.

Hoya are generally epiphytic vining climbers that weave themselves around the trunks of trees with aerial roots which adhere as they climb. Some Hoya however are terrestrial and exhibit a more shrub-like growth pattern.

The genus is incredibly diverse and depending on species or cultivar, leaves and flowers can vary considerably.

The leaves are simple and opposite, but the size, shape, texture and colour palette varies greatly with varying degrees of leaf shape, veining, speckles, splashes, edging, variegation and even fuzzy or furry leaves.

Hoya flowers are five-pointed with fused petals forming in umbels on a stalk called a peduncle. Hoyas can carry single flowers or large clusters in a ball, and everything in between. The range of colour palette on these delicate flowers is exceptional. Many flowers have a shiny, waxy appearance as they form, before opening to reveal their true beauty, with some species even having fuzzy Flowers. The Blooms on Hoya are fragrant from spicy, fruity and floral to less appealing scents.

Hoya are a firm favourite at The Jungle Nursery, with so many diverse species and cultivars, shapes and colour palettes, there truly is more than one Hoya for everyone!
