Alocasia

ALOCASIA is a genus of plants with tubers or rhizomes belonging to the Araceae Family. They are native to tropical and subtropical Asia and eastern Australia. Alocasia leaves emerge from corms or tubers planted beneath the surface.

Also known as Elephant ears, some varieties of Alocasia will grow into unbelievably large plants. Fortunately there are Smaller more manageable specimens known as ‘Jewel Alocasias’ which are collected for their striking foliage

ALOCASIA is a diverse genus with leaf shapes varying from slim Arrowheads to wide Heart-shaped leaves in a variety of textures. A prominent feature of the leaves is the contrasting and pronounced veining.

Closely related to Alocasia are Colocasia which belong to the same family (Aroids) and share similar characteristics. To tell the genus apart, look at the leaves, Alocasias are known to hold the tip of their leaves out or upward whereas Colocasia are known to have a tendency to hold the tips of their leaves down.
